About Susan

Get to know me.

Hello, I'm Susan Cowden, and I'm glad you've stopped by. I'm a wife, mother, writer, and a marriage and family therapist with a Master of Science degree in Family Therapy from Texas Woman's University. I believe in the transformative power of therapy and I can work with you to create a treatment plan that is unique to your struggles, and help you reach your goals. My hope for all of my clients is to live a life characterized by authenticity, courage, and hope, rather than one of perfectionism, shame, and self-criticism.

In the past, I have worked with clients on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. I work with both adolescent and adult clients struggling with a variety of concerns including:

●Eating Disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder)
●Body Image Concerns
●Disordered Eating (diet cycling, chronic dieting)
●Anxiety
●Self-Harm
●Depression
●Life Transitions

My approach to therapy includes cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and solution focused modalities. I have also received training in the Family Based Treatment of Anorexia (Maudsley approach) from Daniel leGrange, PhD and James Lock, MD at the University of Chicago. In addition, I am a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and a Certified Daring Way Facilitator.  I currently serve as the secretary for the Lubbock chapter of the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP).  I have also written as the Eating Disorder Expert for About.com (now Verywell.com) in the past.
